School Name
Bellarmine-Jefferson High School is named after two outstanding persons who have had a
major contribution to our Church and to our country. St. Robert Bellarmine, a Doctor of the
Church, was known as an outstanding student.
He wrote a great deal in defense of the faith. He also helped the people
of the British Isles to establish the divine
right of the people to rule themselves. Thomas Jefferson was one of the
founding Fathers of America,
giving the people a freedom with constitutional rights. Both individuals show in their lives the dignity
and nobility of the human person.
St. Robert Bellarmine wrote:
Peace and union are the most necessary of all things
for men [and women] who live in common, and nothing serves so well to establish
and maintain them as the forbearing charity whereby we put up with another's
defects. There is no one who has not his
[her] faults, and who is not in some way a burden to others.... The school of Christ is the school of charity. In the last day charity will be the whole
syllabus.
